- Archer & Pedro: Secure the blackmail files and burn the decoy.
Narrative
The scene opens on the evening of Tuesday, June 6, 2000, within the walls of the Prison, Radom, which the group is using as a sanctuary while investigating the zip-drive intel. The tension within the makeshift safe haven is palpable. After a tense 6:00 PM dinner, marauders attack the potato fields to the west of the Prison. The immediate threat, however, is internal, stemming from the hostile relationship with the local distillery owners, The Brothers (Mikołaj and Jan Borkowski), who had previously kidnapped Stanislaw to ensure Archer followed through on killing Jakub.
While Stanislaw is occupied trying to ingratiate himself with the brothers and resolve the local conflict, Archer and Pedro launch a decisive, high-stakes action. Having gathered intelligence and used blackmail tactics, they have Jakub at gunpoint and are preparing to take him downstairs. Simultaneously, Mik is deputized to the guard along the wall, risking injury to defend the Prison should the situation escalate.
- The Marauder Attack: Around 6:00 p.m., marauders launch an assault on the potato fields to the west of the prison sanctuary.
- Defense of the Walls: Mik is stationed on the prison walls. During the engagement he snipes the gas tank of an approaching jeep, causing it to explode, and later uses his rifle to “baseball bat” a grenade away from the fence.
- Internal Confrontation: Amid the external chaos, Archer and Pedro take Jakub hostage at gunpoint to resolve a dispute with the Borkowski brothers, who run the local distillery and had previously kidnapped Stanislaw to coerce Archer into killing Jakub.
- Basement Negotiations: Archer and Pedro navigate Jakub through the prison hallways, hiding their weapons from other residents, and gain entry to the locked distillery basement. The brothers are impressed that they followed through on capturing Jakub.
- The Execution Proposal: The brothers suggest taking Jakub out through the storm doors to the potato fields to execute him and dump his body with the marauders to cover up the crime.
- Interrogation and Torture: Instead of immediate execution, the group moves Jakub to a secluded area of the basement to interrogate him. When he resists, they hit him with a gun handle and threaten to burn his hands in the distillery’s burner.
- The Blackmail Reveal: Under duress, Jakub reveals he holds incriminating files on many residents — including the Borkowski brothers, who have pasts involving human trafficking and organized crime. He explains that many “pious” community members are former prisoners who rely on the sanctuary for a clean slate.
- The Kill Switch: Jakub warns that if he stays missing too long, a confederate will trigger a “kill switch” and release all the blackmail publicly.
- The Kascper Mystery: Asked about a suspicious American named Kascper, Jakub becomes visibly nervous, warning that Kascper is “bad news” and should be avoided.
- The Decoy Plan: Archer and Pedro decide to trick the brothers rather than kill Jakub:
- Convince the brothers that Jakub was executed and dumped with the marauders.
- Secure the release of Stanislaw.
- Steal the real blackmail files while burning decoy papers in a public ceremony to give the brothers a false sense of security.
- Retrieving the Files: After whispering the plan to Jakub, Archer and Pedro escort him to his chambers under the guise of an execution. They retrieve the files from under his mattress, confirming the brothers’ history of human trafficking. The session pauses with the group searching for “trash” or old phone books to build the decoy bundle.
- Securing the Evidence: Archer tries to move the files to a stash under his own floorboards, but on encountering Kascper in the hallway he is overcome by stress and flees back to Jakub’s room. The group decides to hide the real files behind a brick in Jakub’s room instead.
- Hostile Confrontation with Kascper: Kascper enters Jakub’s room and demands the return of his handgun. When the group resists, a struggle ensues. Kascper grapples Pedro into a headlock and retrieves the weapon; when Archer tries a right hook, Kascper throws Pedro into him, knocking both to the floor before exiting.
- Persuading Jakub: Jakub is paralyzed with fear regarding Kascper. Pedro persuades him to trust them, explaining that publicly burning the files while secretly keeping the real ones is his best chance at survival.
- Fabricating the Decoy: The group creates a fake docket, finding a Polish Bible in Jakub’s dresser and tearing out sections (Deuteronomy) to match the thickness of the original files.
- The Public Deception: Pedro proceeds to the kitchen common area, stands on a chair, gathers a crowd, announces that “the season with Jakub is over,” and publicly burns the fake records to stage a resolution for the community.
- The Common Room Brawl: During the burning, Archer spots two “fishy” men moving through the crowd toward Pedro. As they prepare to seize Pedro, Archer tackles one of them, sparking a melee. Archer uses a chair to defend himself against an attacker swinging a roll of coins to add weight to his punches.
- Strategic Retreat: Outmatched in close combat, Pedro leaps from the table and retreats into the kitchen for heavy objects to throw. With the real files tucked into his pants, he slips out the back kitchen door toward the basement, leaving Archer behind in the fray.
- Escalation in the Basement: Hearing the commotion, the Borkowski brothers — armed with grenades the group had provided (one a dud) — head toward the common area to investigate.
- Encounter with the Unknown: During his escape, Archer encounters a “massive man in a robe” who remains silent and walks toward the sound of the fight.
The Basement Strategy: While the fight rages upstairs, Pedro forces his way through the storm doors into the distillery basement to confront the Borkowski brothers.
- The Bluff: Pedro convinces the brothers that the “blackmail loop” is closed — claiming they chose not to kill Jakub but burned the evidence (actually the Book of Deuteronomy) in the kitchen.
- Stashing the Evidence: Pedro reveals he still has the real files on his person; the brothers agree to stash the documents in a nook within the basement.
- The Brothers’ Reaction: Believing Jakub neutralized and the threat over, they let Pedro leave safely.
The Intervention in the Common Room: The brawl is interrupted by the arrival of a massive, silent man in a robe, followed by an older, charismatic Polish man who commands the room’s attention.
- The Sermon: The older man delivers a poetic, spiritual speech about “whitewashed tombs” and evil within the walls, effectively stopping the fight.
- The Confession: He asks those involved to confess. The two men attacking Archer confess, and eventually Archer confesses to acting in self-defense.
- The Punishment: The leader decrees the men be forgiven but punished. Archer and his attackers are taken outside to “the crosses” to be chained up for the night.
Regrouping and Revelation: The group (minus Archer) reunites to debrief in a private room.
- Mik’s Inquiry: Mik approaches the charismatic leader (whom he nicknames “Rasputin”) to ask about an encryption device or zip drive. The leader feigns ignorance, claiming such technology would be strange in their sanctuary.
- Marauder Intel: Mik reveals that during the wall defense he noticed a faction of the marauders was highly trained (possibly Russian special forces), distinct from the standard rabble.
- Kascper’s Gun: They discuss Kascper’s strange behavior — retrieving his gun without killing anyone — and note he is currently missing from his room.
Cliffhanger Ending: The group splits up to investigate:
- Mik goes to snoop in Kascper’s room for information or the zip drive.
- Pedro and Stanislaw go to Jakub’s room. When they knock, the door opens to reveal Jakub is not alone: two men pull Pedro inside, and Jakub emerges to attack the other investigator.
